Railway Contractors, Engineers and Navvies

Railway NavvyOur index now includes information on the professionals connected with the initial construction of the railways. These include contractors, engineers, surveyors. We also maintain a separate index on the Railway Labourer, or "Navvy", who carried out the labour for the constructions of the railways.

Sources used to compile our "Navvy Index" are 19th century provincial newspaper reports, and the Navvy Missionary Quaterly Letters 1878-1899 and census information.

For example from the Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette 24 June 1841 - On Saturday morning a man named Thomas Lear about 32 years of age expired in St Thomas's Hospital, London, from injuries sustained whilst employed in excavating a tunnel at Bletchingley on the South Eastern Railway.
